Horizontal Span - Week 2

Exercise 2: Horizontal Span

SATE STICKS
Material
  • Skewers
  • Hot glue gun
Final Design:

We decide to make a design as shown above so that the 'bridge' can hold a huge amount of load when applied. beside that, it is also quite appealing aesthetic wise.

The outcome is successful as it can withstand a few bag of papers as well as 2 people.

 SATE STICKS AND RUBBER BAND

Material
  • Skewers
  • Rubber band
Final Design:

The design chosen for 2nd experiment is as shown above because that with the bridge can stay balance even if there is a heavy load applied.

The outcome of the experiment is a failure. Evn though it didn't collapse, but as more load is added, the design started tilting to one side.

 PAPER BRIDGE

Material
  • Paper
Final Design:

The design for the paper bridge is a similar to that the first experiment design except this time, instead of a spring, the inside of the paper is rolled paper stuffed in as many as possible, with the hope that it can withstand the heavy load.

The outcome is quite a success. The form of the paper was deformed due to great amount of compression load applied.
